St. Barnabas' and All Saints Episcopal Church

St. Barnabas' and All Saints' Episcopal Church (Anglican)
41 Oakland Street, Springfield, MA.
413 732-2981

Our Parish has a long, interesting history. We began as a mission in Forest Park in 1906. On the first Sunday after Easter that year, a mission church school was started by the Seabury Society of St. Peters' Church in an unused stable. The first priest in charge, the Rev. Charles E. Hill, is credited with the idea of naming the mission, "All Saints", after the church in England where Springfield's founder, William Pynchon, had been a warden before coming to America in 1630.

The cornerstone was laid, appropriately, on All Saints' Day in 1908.In 1924, All Saints' Church founded a Sunday School in East Forest Park under the name of St. Barnabas' Mission. The first vicar, Wolcott Coit Treat, arrived in 1926. His work to build up the mission led to the 1931 construction of the building on Sumner Avenue -now the home of the Church of God, Inc.. Because the two Episcopal parishes ministered to the same neighborhood, they merged with a common mission. They chose the Oakland Street site as their parish home.
