THE
PRESIDENT'S CORNER
..April 1999 The tour of Sumner Avenue School was a thrill both for those of us whose children attended several years ago and for parents of the schoolıs future students. Kindergarten children using computers to chick on the weather....weıve come a long way! There will be lots of activity in the neighborhood in the coming months. The Dashevsky Fund will provide funds for Terrace beautification projects; the Farmerıs Market will return; four scholarships will be announced; Illumination Night will be supported by an $800 grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council....just to mention a few key activities. All of this and more is possible through the volunteer efforts of many committed neighbors. Please get involved....meet your neighbors, have fun, and enjoy living in Forest Park! 107 Garfield Restored For years the house at 107 Garfield St. was a neighborhood eyesore but not anymore. After purchasing the house at a tax foreclosure Liam Reynolds restored it with attention to the architectural details that make each house in the neighborhood distinctive. The house has now been sold toa new owner whom we welcome to the neighborhood. Belmont Laundry Law Suit At the time of this writing negotiations which, if successful, will result in the restoration of three houses on Crystal Ave. and expansion of Belmont Laudry are on going. The proposed settlement would transfer a portion of the Foodmart parking lot to Belmont Laundry for its expansion and the three Crystal Ave. houses to Concerned Citizens for restoration. The Springfield Community Development Office has been key to moving this proposal forward. If successful, Crystal Ave. will be preserved as residentially zoned property and Belmont Laundryıs needs will be met. It will be a great outcome for the neighborhood. Although we have reason to be optimistic, remember the words of the great Yogi Berra, ³It aint over til itıs over. ....... Bill Malloy, President |
