Minutes from October 21, 2001 Meeting

 

Meeting was held at the home of Doug and Libby Barnshaw, 237 Longhill Street.

In attendance were the following:  Bill Malloy, Bob and Pat Triggs,  Jane Hetzel, Belle-Rita Novak, Paul Sears, Eileen Foley, Doug and Libby Barnshaw, Maureen Posner and Sandra Collins.

 

Call to order at 7:15pm

Minutes:  A motion to accept the minutes from the last meeting.  One correction the Goodwill parking is not in disrepair but is overrun with weeds and needs “sprucing up”.  Second.  Vote:  all in favor.

Treasurer’s report:  A motion to accept the report.  Second.  Voted:  all in favor. 

Committee Reports:

  1. Community Improvement:  There will be no formal graffiti clean-up day this Fall.  Concerned Citizens has recently hired someone to assist with this effort and no community involvement is needed at this present time.  There will be a cleanup day at Sumner Avenue school on Saturday, November 17th at 9:00am-12:00pm.
  2.  Education:  Maureen Posner discussed the upcoming meeting for Springfield School Superintendent to address the FPCA.  Concerns that the FPCA will be discussing with him will include:  MCAS the needs of vocational students, special needs students and bilingual students, neighborhood schools, busing, class size, crossing guard issues and safety issues-i.e. no sidewalks at Sumner Avenue School. 
  3. Historic:  No report
  4. Parks:  The herbicide process on the lakes at Forest Park my happen but the process will take awhile.  The Zoo made a request to have buffalos in the Zoo; however, the request was denied.  There will be an increase in the salary for the lifeguard for the pools for next summer.  The decorative lighting in front of the Park on Sumner Avenue will be in place soon.
  5. Program/Publicity:  The children’s Halloween party is scheduled for October 28th.
  6. Public Safety:  No report.
  7. X Task Force:  The Farmer’s Market concludes another successful year.  There has been major vandalism at the Bing Theater. 
  8. Forest Park Partnership:  this group is separate from the X Task Force.  The lighting project at the X continues and will total about 60 lights, costing about $350,000.00.  The Lower Longhill Master Plan is in development.  There are 2 interns from UMASS working with Scott Hanson on this plan.  Traffic calming and textured crosswalks are being considered for areas around Forest Park. 
  9. Zoning:  Regarding the Belmont Laundry case-everything has been filed in the appeals court.  Belmont Laundry was requesting a speeding hearing the request was denied.  Big Apple received their permit to sell beer and wine.  The LaBroad Association was in favor of the permit. 

 

New Business:

            Peter Garvey, City of Springfield Building Code Commission will be a guest speaker at the next board meeting. 

            The building that houses the X Pub was sold for $400,000.

            Food Mart continues to have food security issues.  The shuttle will continue and the amount of time will be increased for the remainder of the year. 

            There was a question of how many membership packets have been mailed out this year.

            Belle Rita is working on a community day to be held in the Spring. 

           

There will be no board meeting in November, as the meeting will be a program meeting for the Superintendent to address the FPCA.  The next board meeting will be in December.
