In order to preserve the streetscape, signs are among the items regulated in the Historic District. Signs may not exceed 144 square inches.
At the request of Frances Gagnon, Chair of the Springfield Historic Commission, Bill Malloy provided a list of signs in the Sumner Ave.-Longhill Street area that were suspected of being in violation of this limitation. To date, two of the oversized signs have been corrected or removed. The sign at Greenleaf Court, 127 Sumner Avenue, was voluntarily replaced by a smaller sign.
We are especially appreciative of this voluntary change by the property owner. The offending sign at 115 Sumner Avenue was removed when the property was sold.
The comprehensive review of area signs came about
as a result of a sign approval request made by Dr. George Langlitz for his property
at 80 Sumner Avenue (corner of Sumner and Fort Pleasant Ave.) which was denied
by the Commission. Dr Langlitz has now installed two large posts to hold a sign
not to exceed 144 square inches. A direct appeal has been made to Dr. Langlitz
to voluntarily scale back to one post and a hanging bracket to positively contribute
to the streetscape. Dr. Langlitz's improvements to date have been a welcome
upgrade to this key property at the entrance to the historic district.
