A FARMERS MARKET
AT THE "X" ??
February, 1998
Dear Friends,
The Forest Park Civic Association and The "X" Main Street Corporation are working toward the goal of having a Farmers Market at The X starting sometime this spring. Goodwill has generously offered their parking lot for the location. This is a terrific location because it is accessible by foot, car and bus.
So far, Michael Thomes, Belle Rita Novak and the Promotion Committee of The "X" Main Street Corporation have been working on this project. Michael and Belle Rita attended a seminar in Sturbridge which included people from New York, New Jersey and all of New England who are involved in one way or another with a farmers market.
They said it was a good thing that they didnt know what a farmers market involved when they started their projects. They learned that there is a great deal of planning that goes into having a thriving market. Even if there is a paid market manager, many volunteers are also needed.
That is why we are writing to YOU! If you are interested in helping with this new venture, even if you have no idea as to which part you would like to play, Mike, Belle Rita, or The X" Main Street Corporation would like to hear from you.
To date, well over I00 letters have been sent out to
vendors who are currently selling at other markets. Responses have been received from some
potential vendors. Tuesday afternoon/evening looks like the time that the market will be
held to reach folks on their way home from work. Interestingly, almost as many markets are
held in the afternoon as in the morning. Everyone who has been told about the possibility
of having a farmers market in our commercial neighborhood district is excited about
it. Now we need to deal with the specifics of the project.
Please give Michael Thomes a call at 734-1322 or Belle Rita Novak at 737-1724 if you are interested in being part of this exciting new venture. Or stop by The "X" Main Street office (475 Sumner Avenue) and sign up as to how you would like to participate. Tell them you read about it on the F.P.C.A.'s web site.
