Forest Park Middle School Newsletter Excerpts

Forest Park Middle School has High Expectations for a New Academic Year

Dear Forest Park Parents,

We are a high achieving school with well defined and clear expectations of ourselves, our parents and our students. Our partnership with you, our Forest Park Parents, is KEY to your child’s success at our school. We believe that teachers should be held accountable for teaching, parents should be held accountable for becoming involved and supporting their children, and students should be held accountable for putting forth the effort that will lead to academic success. Therefore, we would like to share with you some of the ways you can prepare your incoming or continuing students for the up coming school year ‘98 -’99:

* Students are required to come to 6th grade with their own current public library card.

* We encourage students to sign up in their public libraries for the Summer Reading Program. We believe strongly that Reading is the Key to Success.

* Subject area teachers have specific school supply requests, but the following list should satisfy most classes:

2 inch Trapper Keeper/Binder (A MEAD 5 STAR with zipper, though expensive, lasts forever!)

5 subject dividers and filler paper.

A pencil case with pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpener, and colored pencils.

A single subject notebook for each subject.

A pocket dictionary.

A pocket calculator.

A large sturdy bookbag.

* If students have access to a computer, we would encourage them to practice their keyboarding skills over the summer.

* We strongly recommend that children know their multiplication facts before entering grade six. Multiplication facts should be second nature to them — like breathing out and breathing in!

Finally, Forest Park teachers believe strongly that Organization is Another Key to Success. Therefore, a Forest Park Agenda Book will be provided for each child. In this organization tool, your child will record all homework assignments, project due dates, quiz and test grades, and set goals for each quarter. In addition, this book is one way in which teachers can communicate with you regarding your child’s progress.

We are excited about and looking forward to working together in the up coming school year. This partnership will bring out the best in each of us!

Math Team Does It Again!

The 1997/1998 Western Massachusetts Math League consists of five school teams; Chestnut, Duggan, Forest Park, Sabis and Wilbraham-Monson Academy. This is the leagues second year led by Mr. Saex, our 8 Grade Math teacher. Each school competes twice against each other. The topics from the Algebra course taught by the math department cover anything from solving equations to factoring polynomials.

This year, the members of the Forest Park Team are 8th graders, Chris Allsop, Kayla Bovat, Katelyn Bushey, Melissa Neil, Sara Patashnick, Jeffrey Harrington, Kate Kogut, Adriana Rua, and Trung Vo. At this point our school has been very successful with three wins and no losses, beating Duggan 21-16, Chestnut 13-11, Sabis 27-22. We have one more meet against Wilbraham-Monson Academy. Our team practices every Wednesday and we are looking forward to our final meet. Wish us luck!!

Scrabble Days

....... by Austin Brookman, Sean Whelan and Lawrence Rosado - gr. 7

Forest Park Middle School held a Scrabble tournament after school for all three grades. On those three days, we played some crazy words whose meaning many people did not know, such as "qat", "xi", "re" and "zax". At the end of the three days, only two teams from every grade would be going to the city wide tournament. Sean Whelan and Eric Ryan were the high scorers, with 639 points for their team. Austin Brookman and Lawrence Rosado scored 535 points for their team. On Thursday, March 19, 1998, all the teams from around the city went to the Professional Development Center to participate in a Scrabble Tournament. Sean Whelan and Eric Ryan were the winners in 7th grade. Congratulations guys!!
