Literacy Through the Arts Programming
Cultural programming designed to improve literacy for children and youth, will be presented by the Bing Arts Center. The sharing and interpretation of stories will be experienced through various art forms, encouraging young people to develop literacy competence and skills. A wide variety of classes and workshops, including motion picture production, screen writing and play writing, sequential art, and theater, will be offered.
Storyspark Workshop Saturday, Jan 22, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Ages 10 and up. $10 per student.
Created and taught by speaker, playwright, and radio host Doug Foresta, LCSW, this interactive, experiential workshop is geared towards helping young people (ages 10 and up) uncover the stories that they most need to tell. Students will use various writing prompts, improvisation, creativity and acting exercises to uncover their authentic stories.
Webisodes: Video Production
for an On-line Series Beginning on Wed., Feb. 2,
4 - 6 p.m. Ages 8 - 17. Six week semester, $125 per student.
Students will make up teams to create, write, and produce an episodic series which will be available on the Bing Arts Center's website. This will be an ongoing creative project.
Art of the Story: A Story Time Program for Children Beginning on Sat., Feb. 5,
11 a.m. to noon. Ages 4 - 6. Free.
Children will have books read aloud to them and then work on creating art to express what they’ve heard. They benefit greatly when exposed to literacy at an early age. Listening to stories in conjunction with drawing and painting fosters intellectual growth, creativity, and a sense of safety and well-being.
