FPCA Receives Two Bequests

The FPCA has received Two bequests from the family of Eleanor Dashevsky to help bolster the FPCA's efforts in accomplishing its goals that she shared so personally." One of the bequests is for "general war chest", the other is "for neighborhood beautification".

Eleanor, who died about three years ago, was one of the charter members of the Civic-Association in the early 60's. She and many others pulled neighbors together to fight the zone change of a parcel of land on Sumner Avenue and Beechwood from residential to commercial. By coincidence, some years later Ellie became the owner of part of the parcel and moved a house from Applewood Place to Beechwood to prevent its demolition.

The defeat of that zone change became a landmark decision in the late 60's when the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court found for the neighbors, a decision that now is of vital importance in attempting to overturn the Belmont Laundry zone change of three residential properties on Crystal Avenue.

From the early 1960's until her death in 1995, Ellie made many significant contributions to the Civic Association and to the Forest Park neighborhood. One of her biggest contributions was to promote, along with other residents, activities that created a sense of community - block parties, giant auction/tag sales, flower plantings, street festivals, quilting bees, progressive suppers, etc.

Ellie's strong political activity over the years on behalf of neighborhood-friendly candidates was a factor in assuring a friendly ear at City Hall.

Our thanks to the Dashevsky family, for their continued support!
